As many pet owners know it can be stressful trying to find someone to care for your pet while you are away. Now imagine that you are being deployed and have no one to watch your beloved companion.  This is what happened to Shawn and Alisa Johnson, who serve in the US Navy and US Marine Corps. The couple was scheduled to be deployed at the same time and found themselves in a position where their dog JD would need a temporary home.  Luckily for them family pulled through and assisted in the care of their beloved pet.  Realizing that they were not the only ones who were faced with the stress of finding their furry friend a temporary home, the two decided to take action.  In June 2011 the non-profit Dogs on Deployment was founded by the husband and wife duo.
DoD is now a national network for military members to find volunteers willing to board/foster their pets while they are deployed or have other service commitments, making them unable to temporarily care for their pets. To date DoD has successfully found temporary care for nearly 750 pets.  Their success would not be possible without the contributions of supporters and volunteers who have opened their homes so that their owners could remain focused on their missions.
Not a dog lover?? Don’t worry DoD is not just for dogs! All military pets are eligible for boarding.  For more information on how to donate or volunteer please visit http://dogsondeployment.org/
